Child Scholar Thirugnanasambandar, along with his devotees, on his way toPatteeswaram on an intensely hot summer day

Lord Thenupureeswarar orders his group of ghosts to provide a shelter made of pearls to protect Thirugnanasambandar from the scortching heat, and asks Nandi to move aside so that the great child scholar can worship the Lord.
Maharaja Chitrasena prayed to Lord to have a child and conducted Puthira Kaameshti Yaagam. Upon having a child, he celebrated the glory of the Lord in the month of Thai (Tamil month from mid Jan - first half Feb)

This is very old and great temple in Kumbakonam. The Goddess Durga here can be seen from the temple doors and it's very common to give a green and red 9 yards saree. The Goddess Durga here can be seen wearing the 9 yards saree in the traditional brahmin style called Madsar, which is worn by Tamil Iyer ladies on all traditional occasions such as marriage, ceremonies, pooja to ancestors, Mahalakhmi Vrat celebrated in South India, etc. The temple is big with a lot of beautiful paintings of the various forms of Goddess. Inside the temple, there are two big temples for Lord Shiva, named here as Thenupureeswarar and his consort, Gnanambigai. Tales are also painted on the walls and narrated in Tamil below the paintings. The Goddess Durga is very powerful here. Devotees worship her with a garland of 48 or 108 lemons and neem leaves. She is worshipped mainly to install Dharma or truth where there is a governance of evil in every form. She is truly a mother for all orphans and orphan families. Her presence can be felt miraculously by her true devotees.
